ARAK SON OF THUNDER N°31 (March 1984)

Ok, this one is weird. Is Ernie back for a one issue stint on Arak, 1 year and a half after his departure from the title? Well....yes and no. Yes, because he's producing 8 new pages, drawing and inking, in a quite simple and effective style. No, because those pages are a cheap excuse to reprint at the heart of this comic the content of the Arak Preview comic which was inserted in Legion of Super-Heroes 298 for free, before the initial launching of Arak. And those pages not only dated from 2 years ago, but were the product of Ernie teaming up with Tony Dezuniga at the inking. So the shock beetween those old pages and the new ones is quite abrupt.

If Dc (and especially Marvel) weren't afraid until the beginning of the 80's to reprint a comic when a deadline wasn't assured, instead of skipping a month or putting on a fill-in, it's quite surprising to still find in early 84 this kind of trick. I suppose Arak 31 is probably one of the last "let's reprint an old story" comics of an ongoing serie.
In fact, this issue is a weird rarity, seeing that we have 4 differents types of drawing by Ernie: the old reprint, the new pages, a pin-up in beetween and a cover with very thick and agressive black lines!
Well, I guess DC won it at the end: you'll have to pruchase it....again!
