ME: You illustrated several horror/suspense stories for Warren. Were there something liberating in drawing stories where everything falls apart at the end after years of "nice stories" or were you mostly still struggling too much with your style to appreciate it?
ERNIE: Jim Warren was an exceptional man, and
an innovative publisher.
He gave all his freelancers carte
blanche as to their creativity. So, yes, there was a sense of freedom
after some of the constraints the Harvey characters dictated--both in
style and substance.
-The rest of you carrier will
show that you are not a man that will shy away from graphic violence,
sex or horror in your stories. What are your limits and have they
ever been tested during your carrier?
-Don't like the sound of that
word--"limits". Clearly, I have them--as we all do. But I'd
rather test them for myself. I don't care to have anyone tell me what
I can't do.
-You also worked at almost the same time
on Vampirella. Did you enjoy working on those king of kinky female
super-heroic characters?
-I just took what came along. No
preferences.
