ME: One of your last work for DC was the Underworld mini-serie, scripted by Robert Loren Fleming. It was cop mature stories, way before Vertigo. Gene Colan was supposed to draw it in the first place. Did Len Wein, its editor, propose it to you or did Robert Fleming ask for you?
ERNIE: Robert asked for me. He was a young,
very talented writer. Unaccountably, he came up against obstruction
from many of the DC management. "Underworld" was a
beautifully crafted script. Yet the series was not promoted. Robert's
frustrations grew so that he finally quit DC and then quit comics. He
has never looked back.
-Did you use for Underworld a lot
of photo references for cars, weapons, city shots and how did your
use of the photos references evolve over the years with the rise of
Internet and of computer use?
-Yes, of course I used photo reference
and continue to do so. Now, with Google, the reference is at my
fingertips. Who the heck knows what a Pashtun guerrilla looks like?
