This huge graphic novel was first published by Hudson Press in 2009 and then by Plume in 2010. It is one of the modern "biography" Ernie worked on (along with Che and Anne Frank) except that this one is , due to its subject, also part fiction seeing that we do not have a lot of historical informations about Vlad the Impaler.
Of course, there is several bloody and violent scenes, but nothing more than the usual superhero mainstream comics. At least here, there is significance behind those scenes. The historical facts are also interesting, like the fact that Vlad made several back and forth on the throne. There are several sudden changes in style (most notably during the battles) but all of them make sense and have a purpose. This biography is unusual (the ending is weirdly anticlimatic and rushed) but in a good sense. It mimics well the psychotic and schyzophrenic nature of Vlad. This makes a very convincing and beautifully (and savagely) rendered story to read.
