AMETHYST PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD N°13 (February 1986)

This issue takes place right after Crisis and a major development appeared during it: Amethyst became BLIND! At that time, that was something that did not occur often in comics (in Daredevil only?). But it's a very clever idea: it put Amethyst in a position where all her confidence is blown away, at the same time that horrors and demons invade Gemworld.
Also, Dr Fate is so being a jerk, so mean to Amethyst... letting this poor bling girl in a temple surrounded by demons, after having torned appart what she thought by retconning a little Amethyst's origin, connecting her now with the Lord of Chaos VS Lord of Order theme of Dr Fate background.

This issue put a rift beetween readers, some being really angered by its dark tone (they forgot it was a tone already present in the maxi serie and in the last issues of Gary Cohn) and by the "retconning". Plunging with a flashback to a time when Amethyst parents where still alive is a really good idea, the only part which doesn't really had something of value to the title is the confusing Lord of Order connection. Overall, I think it's really great and that Keith Giffen and  Robert Loren Fleming made a terrific job, putting the Amethyst title a little farther into drama.
Ernie Colon job on the previous issue was already amazing, here it's simply incredible: lots and lots of detail, effects, a very inventive page layout, lots of shadows, a frightening Lord of Chaos monster, various and easily readable face expressions...this one has it all! Karl Kesel proves that, so far, he has been the perfect match with Ernie. The title is completly back at his peek, and even higher: this should have been the way the ongoing title should have been launched.
