If it wasn't ver y clear, that's now for sure: Amethyst is almost now an horror fantasy title. Remember, there was a lot of horror scenes already in the maxi-serie, but it was often softened a little by comedy or everyday life scenes. That's not the case here: Amethyst fall into despair and drama continue here... and it's simply mesmerizing! The fact that a scene like this one works so well is due of course to its writers, but that's the way Ernie is putting in on paper that not only make it work but emphatize it. Is Keith Giffen providing layouts to Ernie? We can recognize his 9 panels grid here. It's very clever: by surrounding the action in a very classic standart grid, it makes the reader jump ever more when the horror appears! (off panel, which is even more frightening)
Bob Smith is the inker on this issue and he's making a really good job. You can see a big difference in the way Amethyst hair is treated but otherwise, it's not invading at all. Tension is reaching its peek with young Carnelian the victim of Dark Opal broach in one of the most frightening scene ever. Horror is a its peek as Dark Opal makes his return on the last page, litterally bursting from Carnelian's body (yurk!). Even with the change of inker, this issue will stay forever in your head, with some unforgettable scenes. Ernie is making such a wonderful job, even surpassing some his better pages on the maxi-serie. That's good stuff!
