AMETHYST PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD N°15 (June 1986)

Okay, I'm not gonna lie: Keith Giffen (and Mindy Newell, replacing Robert Loren Fleming frow now on), if really it was what they had in their mind from the beginning, took a major bail....and loose! Remember, last issue closed on Dark Opal making his return in a unforgettable scene and after months of tension building. Well....spoiler alert....as soon as he comes back, he explodes on page 2!
The intension is clear: putting Dark Opal away to introduce an ever more frightening foe (in this case of duo), responsible for Dark Opal easy defeat. If Flaw and The Child are a really nice addition to the cast, it's clear they can't win it over the huge disapointment readers will felt when they see they were cheated and that Dark Opal will not return for more than 2 pages!

In concordance with issue 13 seing Amethyst connected to Dr Fate background, Flaw and Child are agents of Chaos. They make  great adversaries to Amethyst and her allies and in fact, offer more than a challenge, beating everyone up, until Amethyst seems to win the day, to only see Child destroying in anger Castle Amethyst!
Child is an unusual character: his/her attitude is one of a child, cruel whithout even realizing it. You really can't tell if he's a boy or a girl, except by being really attentive. His androgynic look, added to his harlequin costume is really disturbing to the reader, used to things being really clear in super heroes mainstream books.
Karl Kesel is back and, if there is a little less  graphic effects and surprises than the previous issues, this one being a mostly a big fight, it is still something you really must purchase.

  1. Everything Giffen wrote for Amethyst sucks. That shoe horning into the Legion of Superheroes was stupid.

  2. I'll agree....to disagree with you. I think the connection to Legion of Super-Heroes (happening later in the mini in the form of Mordru origin) is really smart and gave a very nice background to this Legion arch ennemy. The Dr Fate Lord of chaos, on the contrary, doesn't seem to bring that much. the connection to Legion doesn't seem to me like a shoe horning, and in fact concern only 2 characters (Mordru and the White Witch). at least, giffen took a bid and brought back some of the intensity of the maxi-série. It would have been more easy to write something bland and average. That's not the case here, so I understand it can create extreme reactions to readers.
Thanks for the comment anyway! :)

  3. Its not what the original creators intended. In the end he killed (hacked) Amethyst in the Legion of Super Heroes series. Great art in the mini series by Esteban Moroto, but way out of character

Lot of potential in this series that was wasted. Once the book went bi-monthly, Giffen really fed this book to the sharks. It wasn't fun anymore and most people don't like the dark tone set in this. Most enjoy the original 12 issue series immensely and to ignore anything after it. I do agree it got average a bit after the mini, but still enjoy it much better than the Giffen stuff. Better to have concluded this series with a mini and to have left the character alone as intended in the original series. The character asassination and eventual killing of Amethyst is terrible. Made Amethysts Earth father a serial cheater and Taffy the dog put to sleep--------so cruel and mean.

Too much killing of ladies in comics since the past 26 yrs or so. Maybe if the comics world wasnt so Image Xmen or Wolverine zombie based, Amethyst could have continued

It is just comics. I dont read any new comics these days. Got tired of the excessive character killing or
radical personality changes every time a new writer comes in to a book . Could have brought intensity to this series without killing Amethyst and 100% personality changes. The comic just seemed mean and vindictive in the ending

Some change is very good if you read James Hudnalls Strike force Morituri from Marvel. No Giffen style writing here.

  4. Amethyst is not really killed, and certainly not in a in-your face-way. And when have you read that the dog what put to sleep?!
And the father of amethyst a serial cheater? Have we read the same thing? He's not portayed at all like he serial cheater, he's portayed as human, a faulty human and he has a nice attitude, struggling with his desire to keep his family intact. It'snot fair a tll to put the fate of the amethyst series ending on giffen shoulders. The ongoing series, even if written by the same creative team wasn't working. The serie was already doomed saleswise when Giffen took over.
And the ferocity and violence you see in giffen writing of amethyst was already there in the maxi serie.
I don't like everything keith giffen wrote, but I really think he's one of the most inventive writer out there. :)
