It's not written on the cover but this issue is the LAST of the ongoing Amethyst serie! What happened? Well, sales were not high enought and, despise the return of Ernie Colon and the change of writers 3 issues ago, the title was almost already doomed (it turned bimonthly 6 moths ago). The fact that the promised toy deal never happened probably put DC in a position where they didn't see what purpose the Amethyst title was filling anymore.
It's a shame of course. Even if you forget how awesome this title is (or turned out to be once Ernie came back), it was one of the only title with a fantasy background and appealing to girls and grown-ups. By axing it, DC is loosing a book of a kind. In fact, the title is not really axed: there is still one final issue to be published, but it will be 2 months later under the title Amethyst Special, publishing what would have been Amethyst Princess of Gemworld 17.
With this issue, Amy is back to earth, reminding us how talented Ernie is at family scenes. Poor Amy is really on a over-dramatic ride: her return to earth, as Flaw and Child continue to wreck havoc on Gemworld, is not a happy one: Emmy took her place as the only child of Amy's earth parents. Again, it's a really mature theme here, treated really well in really heartbreaking scenes. It's even more dramatic when we see that Amy's dad is indeed cheating on his wife.
This issue was due: it was too long since we saw Amy interacting with her family. After last issue big fight and havoc, it's really a tribute to Ernie talent to see him making wonders with such a simple scene than a sobing young girl on her bed, talking to her dog. Danger loom on the last pages, as Flaw is threatening Amy's family if she does not come back to Gemworld to face her destiny...
