THE GREAT AMERICAN DOCUMENTS VOLUME 1 : 1620-1830 (2014)

I'm late in my chronicles of the latest graphic novels released by Ernie. This one is not even the last one published but Volume 2 should find its way to librairies this year or in 2016.

This educa-comics - as I like to call them- has a rather ambitious task: to explain the historic importance of the most fondamental texts that build America. There is 20 documents and historic situations explained very clearly in this volume, that goes suntil 1830.

It's never easy to illustrate this kind of book, especially the final excerpts texts scenes at the end of each chapter. But Ernie managed to do it both with clarity and an artistic appeal.

Contrary to some other educabooks he worked on, you never feel that he is bored or that you can't find a line or a way a face is drawn that will not appeal to you.

The book is a high quality product: bigger than the previous Hill & Wang books Ernie worked on, a very nice paper, design, and one of the most gorgeous cover Ernie ever produced.
For a foreigner like me, quit eignorant on American history, that is a must-read and a really enjoyable way to supply for the lack of American history teaching in french schools.

HILL AND WANG  published THE GREAT AMERICAN DOCUMENTS VOL.1
Ruth ASHBY wrote it (154p)
and...
Ernie COLON drew it and its cover !
