ME:You drew 2 Legions of Super-Heroes
mini-series (Cosmic Boy & Legionnaires Three) scripted by Keith
Giffen, who also provided probably a panel grid with perhaps even
very loosed breakdowns. Keith Giffen is known, among other things, to
have provided the famous (some people call it infamous) 9 identicals
panel grid to pencillers, at a time in the 90's when the trend was to
completly deconstruct the page. On your two Legion minis, there are
several pages with this grid asking the penciller to use all his
skills to make the page dynamic.
Did you enjoy this constraint and
do you think this is a clever exercise for young pencillers?
ERNIE: I didn't consider it a restraint. My
hero Herge, uses a grid-like page layout with occasional double
panels or full page scenes. He was a master storyteller. Keith is
probably the best plotter/writer in comics. Plots come spilling out
of his ears. Legions was fun to do. I expect young cartoonists to
advance storytelling. But it won't be accomplished with merely clever
or deliberately obscure tricks.
