Ok first: can you believe this cover? A lot of people have tried to play with obscurity on their cover, but I have never seen one working so well, especially since Amethyst covers are usually quite bright and colorfull. It's especially relevant, since something terrible was gonna happen to the character Amethyst during Crisis 2 months later. It's a coincidence but still....Ernie colon fortune teller?
Back to our issue with Ernie still using the "new simple round" style he came back with, but with more panels this time. We are back to a more "standard" use of panels layout, even if standart doesn't make Ernie justice at all, seeing that his pages layout have always been quite dynamic, effective and original: the opposite of boring! Karl Kesel is still doing wonders at the inking. The opening scene is especially interesting technically, the way Ernie is using different tools to figure the sky.
The tension is building up and one of the more interesting subplots developping here is the one involving Amy's dad, ont the verge of cheating on his wife with a student. Ernie is so good at body langage and in his "camera angles" choices, it reminds you that that's not only the richness, the crazyness of the Gemworld which is interesting here, but also basic human interactions. That's also very clever and courageous of Gary Cohn to introduce parent adultery in a mainstream young girl book.
